Sooooo I'm not sure how to get these collars out. I was able to wiggle the other side loose but this side won't budge. How can I get these studs out or the sheet metal collars?
-
I just kept tapping on the axle shaft and mine popped free. It took a lot of hits. Then vise grips to pull of studs.
-
Be ready to catch the oil unless you drained it before hand.
-
Hit the center of the axle a good whack with a hammer, the axle will bounce and shake those bushings loose.
-
I'll give it a go, so the vibration from the hammer swing and the bouncing of the axle against the rear end should loosen the bushings huh?
-
Yes.

There is actually a tool to take those out. They are hard to come by now a days as most axles don't use the wedges any more. To make your own take a pair of pliers and grind one jaw to a point that points to the other jaw. Then when you put the point of the wedge you ground into the one jaw into the split of the wedge you can get a hold of them and wiggle them out. You do have to hit the end of the axle first though to get everything loosened up a bit.

Have you tried to use the two threaded hole opposite each other on the flange to push the axle out. I forget to size I think it might be 3/8 course. It will at least help with the removal

I'm missing four of the cone washers. Does anyone have a modern day equivalent, or a few spares for sale? Thanks, DW

You should be able to go to a big rig parts house and get them.

I think I have some extra wedges. I will have to look in the morning.

I checked and I have some spare wedges. $1 each plus shipping.

Just took my axles out this evening. I cleaned up the bolts real good with a wire brush and sprayed some lock free to soak overnight. They looked bad and i didn't thing the hammering would do the job, but about 50 wacks with a 4lb hammer and they popped free; both sides.
Now i'm in seach of the correct size bearing nut sockets to remove the drums. I saw another link discussing the sizes but nothing definitive.
I'm measuring 3 9/32 for the outer nut, but not sure of the inner.
Anyone recently taken the drums off and knows the correct size?
Thanks,
Paul

I use an 3 1/4" wheel nut socket OTC #1909 for the outer nut, and a 3 7/8" wheel nut socket OTC #1913 for the inner nut.
