Hi all,
Does anybody have an idea what the weight of a M4A1 will be without: engine, gearbox, rear armor, doors, hood, winch? The time has come that I have found and bought my own halftrack! (That will be a different post after pickup). For transport I have arranged a flatbed with a crane on the truck, and is suddenly rescheduled to tomorrow. The crane however has a lifting capacity of 6600 lbs. Will this be sufficient to hoist it onto the flatbed?

My M2, with full armor and full fuel tank weighed on the scale at 13,180 pounds. A well equipped 1 ton truck and 18K or more flat bed trailer should pull it without a problem. As for the crane, the halftrack chaise and front armor is probably 9,000 pounds with the features you stated. Hope this helps.

If it helps it should be light enough to go on a roll back if it is long enough. Mine had an engine and tracks and was able to go on a roll back. It was delivered around 80 miles that way. Good luck.

Hi all,
Well, it was a close call but we managed to have it lifted onto the flatbed. The crane had to be fully retracted so it was able to use it's maximim capacity! So the weight is somewhere just under 6600 lbs. It currently is still on the flatbed as I have to clean out the workplace, we will lift it off tomorrow and then all the fun will start!. Transport was initially planned three weeks ago but I had to cancel it because Covid decided to show up, the b****rd! We rescheduled to tomorrow but that got cancelled as well yesterday, but I was lucky that the truck of the company I work for was available and the driver had no problems with this charity project! Herewith some pictures I took today. I will start another restoration thread soon to keep you updated. For now, thank you all for you information and possible solutions! It feels good to be part of this wonderful community.

It's because you took the picture with your phone in the vertical position as opposed to horizontally. It confuses the site hosting the images. I fight with this still also. It probably shows up correctly if you look at the site on mobile, some times it does and some times not.
Anyway, you did nothing wrong. Just try to take all your pictures you plan on showing here with your phone horizontal!

At first glance I was thinking a M2 winch model but possibly an M4.

Ok, thanks Corey, I will keep that in mind! I think it is a good base indeed. I'm very happy (and lucky) with it! Yes, that is my son. Everything John Deere, trucks, forklifts etc is his favorite. Comes with that his grandpa has some US WW2 vehicles too so he basically is born and raised in between olive drab!
Steve, it is a M4A1 indeed. Chassis number roots it as a 1943 HT. My aim is to restore it as a M4A1. It has the reinforced chassis for the mortar base.

Thanks! Will sure post pictures of my progress! Data plate has been taken out in France unfortunately during overhaul. Instead there is a French plate which states that it was overhauled in 1961 in Vannes, Normandy. Have got a repro plate though!

Ok, wow! Thanks Cleprechaun! Can you give some detail on the model and if the engine and transmission was in there? It might be nice for future purpose for others to have this details.

I drove my M15a1 (same frame as m3) to the scales with no back on it at all. It had no upper door armor or windshield armor and I was running off of two jerry cans of gas. It came to 11,200 pounds. I registered it at DMV then put a flat bed on it and all the cab armor it was missing. I have not weighed it again but it’s safe to say 12,000 poundish

Your Michelin Invincible tires look to be in great shape (1950's).. they weigh a ton, but the solid rubber core holds up well .. those tires were used by the French, so guessing at one time this was a French Army halftrack.

Mark, the weight of these things are insane! The rubber is disintegrating, everytime I barely touch it I look like I've come through a chimney..

It looks like we will be restoring in tandem as I’ve just bought a halftrack too. Mines in Holland and will be shipped over to the UK soon hopefully. The one I’ve bought is missing the rear floor but it does come with some of the M16 rear armour plate. I think I may have an issue replacing the floor unless anyone knows of someone doing repro M16 floors. BAIV have some of the repro rear armour I’m missing so at least that will be covered off.
