I'm having some difficulty wit the rope seals on the shifting rod.i have been tapping them slowly but can't get all the rope in to each seal. I have been using a brass punch and hammer. Any ideas or tips. Thanks

i cant help you much.
i went threw 2 of them so far. the first one i didnt replace the rope seal, i just cranked it down some more. the second on i machined out the casting and installed a regular oil seal.

Thanks steve. I guess I'll get as much of the rope seal in there and call it a day.

Can you give more details on the seal replacement and machining? I am rebuilding a PTO and would like to use seals. Are there 3 seals in the PTO?

the cap that the output shaft seal mounts in i clamped in my milling machine and cut out for the seal.
i don't remember what seal number i used.

Does anyone have a modern number for the two front seals of the PTO Drive Shaft? They are Part "L" Packing B184510, on page 313 of the Ord 9. There is no cross over in the 1944 National Oil and Grease Seals Publication, or any reference in the 1940's Zeligson Parts Catalog. Thanks. Paul

I ended up going in a different direction on my PTO. I machined the front bearing retainer for a conventional oil seal. The seal is a CR 11730 (same as National 470328). The seal rides far enough towards the U-joint on the shaft that it misses the worn part where the old packing type seal was. Unfortunately I my case the shaft was quite pitted, so I had to install a speed-sleeve (99118) to fix that problem. Dale

Would it be possible to use rubber or neoprene 'O' rings for the shifting rod shaft seals?
Scott.

If your rods are smooth you could probably get away with using thick o-rings. But if your rods are rough or pitted the o-rings will get torn up fairly quick. I used valve packing and haven't had any problems. DW
