So in the ongoing saga which is half track ownership, my voltage regulator died. I did the tests as ref'd in the TM and bypassed it with a jumper cable. Man, at 1100 rpm my ammeter spiked at +100 and the generator was putting out 18.5 volts. Needless to say I pushed in on the throttle cable to reduce the amps down to a respectable 55 in a hurry. I didn't smell any wires burning so hopefully I didn't fry anything putting that much current through it. I'll probably find a blackened mouse some day under the dash board with his teeth around a bare wire.
Long story short, I told my tale of woe to a good buddy of mine. He's now giving me one of his spare voltage regulators new in the package to plop in my m3a1. That's mighty nice of him but now I feel like a mooch. This now leads me to three questions;
1. Does anybody know what the going rate for a nos one of those is? I'd like to perhaps get a new one to
replace his or take him out to dinner. Hopefully these things aren't too expensive so the dinner doesn't
have to be in France or something.
2. Do we know of anybody who repairs bad voltage regulators or are they so readily available that nobody
bothers?
3. Can I just through this new one in there and expect it to work correctly or do I need to adjust something
with those fingers in there?

Chris, check your manuals should give you a trouble shooting proceedure. I know I've seen the individual relays for sale. I know the jeeps have modern solid state voltage regulator that looks like the old ones. But that is 6 volt. The french ones may be solid state also. Someone else can chime in on that one.
Used ones come up on ebay once in a while. Might post up over on the "G" and see if someone has one for sale. My 2cents

I'm really glad to know this wasn't a $300 part or something. $80-$100 means I guess I'm taking him out to Red Lobster. I took the NOS out of the waxed paper package last night. From the dates on the box it was packed in '44. Looked like the day it came out of the factory.
Perhaps I'll track down that idea about putting the later model regulator inside my now spare housing to keep as a spare for when my new one dies.
On a side note, thanks for putting out the information on the map light shield from the antique tractor supplier. I have officially put one of those on my Christmas list.

Too bad I can't make it back to NY this Christmas, I'd come out and help you install the new part! Of course, you'd have to fire up that torpedo heater so we could stay warm. BTW, it's gonna be 80 degrees this weekend out here in SD!
