Title: Gun ring mounting

Which way does the gun ring sit, mounting brackets closer to top or closer to bottom?

 My ring mount was set up with the mounts closer to the bottom, my gun ring was removed from the vehicle when they bought it from the military back in the early 50's, they took it off and set it down on some cedar post and there it sat till I bought the half-track from the guys son almost 50 years later.
