Title: hoop mounting brackets
Post by: HenryVIII on May 13, 2014, 12:23:22 AM
I can't find a good picture. Would anyone have the measurements or drawings and a good picture of the canvas hoop brackets that mount on the inside of the side armor. I need to make a set. I think there are 3 on each side. and are they all the same. I think the rear ones lean back, center are vertical, and not sure if the front one leans foreward or are straight. Thanks

These vary depending if you have an M2 or M2A1. The M2 I have seen cast brackets that bolt to the side armor, Al Steifel has these and the bows, and I've seen them welded to the batents. The M2A1's that I've seen that are original have pockets on the under side of the parimeter rail that the bow uprights go into. M3 and M3A1 are different also. From what Don and I summed up is the the front and rear brackets are the same but the center on varies on location depending if you have a M3 or M3A1. The difference is which side panel the bracket is it. The M3 it is on the front panel and the M3A1 it is on the rear panel. I will get a drawing of the casting in the next few days fo you.

If there is interest in the bows and extension pieces I can measure mine out on Friday and post Friday evening.

Mine are bolted to the side armor and my rear armor is all Bob Gillard's stuff. I will measure that to on Friday and will try and identify the side armor CAD files so bright87 can double check me. ;D

I just bought a complete set from Al Stifle down at Tower Park. He has the economy set which is flat bar with a round welded to it. He also sells the cast ones too. I got the cast ones and have them  mounted already. Price was good.

Well I slept in to much today and didn't have time to take some measurements but will be at the shop tomorrow, Saturday. I did get some photos of the mounting locations on my halftrack. I believe the front and middle locations share bolt holes that should already be there. The outside photos are on the passenger's side and the inside photos or of the driver's side.

Front mount location. The two black armor bolts under the footman loop next to armor locker door latch.

Middle location. fourth paired set of armor bolts down the middle.

Rear location. Two diagonal armor bolts in the upper rear corner above second footman loop.

What did the M2 skate rail top bows look like? same as the A1? The bracket pictures I have seen show a loop at the top of the armor but no lower pin.

Thanks Steve for all the detail. I think I've got most of what I need to build my own, but does anyone have an answer for the question Torque asked? My track is also an M2, that I one day will have a skate rail in.

The pins are part of, welded to, the batents with small bent loops that the bow extensions go through mounted on the upper armor. I'm searching for some original photos and found some I will post later this week. The loops I mentioned can be purchases from Al Steifel. I don't have any to make measurements but can com up with something for you. If Tim Sutter or Mike France is reading this maybe they can take some photos of Tim's M2 and post them here.

Duh, I'm an idiot!.... Thanks for short circuiting the right part of my brain by saying "Tim Sutter".
I guess I should look more closely at the resources I already have. Here is one of the many reference pictures I took of Tim's HT between rain storms at Tower park. You can clearly see exactly what I'm asking about.

Bought a set of lowers this week from him. He has both upper and lowers-the uppers have a hole and the lowers have a pin.
He only has the welded type now-no castings. $25 for set of all six lowers, who could pass on that! Will see how close to original they are when they arrive.

Well, here they are...... :-\ Guess with a lot of grinding, they might look like something, I think. At least they were cheap. Beware!

Here are my six-pack after lots of modifications. Now I can install the great set of top bows I bought from outsider at the convention!
Thanks to Steve also for the measurements.
