You won't be sorry for getting the Vintage Maine wiring harness. It was a good fit. Joe has answered all my emails but I called initially and talked to him direct to make sure I got the right harness.
Those caged nuts were a pain I'll bet. I had to drill mine out

Got firewall cleaned up and welded up some small holes and another section of frame cleaned and painted. Neighbor helped put it back on. I'm finishing work on the steering column what's the thread pitch on the steering wheel nut I ruined it getting it off and have to get another. Looks to be 7/8. Nice job guys on your tracks. thats looking good.
what is the price for one of those vintage wiring harnesses. i heard they where around $1700
-
1250.00 from what I've been told it worth it. Thanks for keeping the site going I've learned more here then anywhere else on the net.

Started up the engine this week. She ran pretty good but found some leaks in the radiator my friend and I patched up will eventually have to go for a record or new on if I can find one.fuel pump leaked so that needs work it was rebuilt when I picked up the engine must have been a Friday job. I also notice a small bit of bubbly rusty water maybe a drop or two coming from the head bad gasket or does it just need to be retorked. At least she ran which was good. Ran her for about 15 minutes just like the rebuilder said yo break in the cam.
-
Rod Shaver had an NOS winch model radiator at Tower Park this spring…I doubt he's sold it.
I got an NOS roller model radiator from Dave Pojta/Liberty Engineering Services a few years back. He was revamping his website but it's still not up and he hasn't responded to my last two emails.
Great work…I like following restoration projects. Keep it up!

I'll throw this out. I decided to have mine recored, By the time I would have bought an NOS radiator that is 70 plus years paid shipping and taking a chance the old core was rotten, it was about a push cost wise and I have a new core. It helps we have a first class radiator shop in town too. I ran on a 90' day, and it never got above 185. You might consider that option.
Don G.
-
Thanks guys I think your right don will recore one of these day just need the lottery fairy to pay a visit. Don how did you know your head gasket let go.
-
I noticed a drop in power and I had a miss too. Did not take too long to figure out after we did a compression test. Matt our mechanic figured it out pretty quick. Be sure to retorque the head after you run it in. That's what happened I had a head bolt get loose.

Got another section of frame cleaned and primed and dropped the rear axle. Debating on whether to tear into it now or later. Also I pulled off the rear bulkhead plate and there are thee nuts welde to it. The track was originally an m15. Does anyone know what they are for. Thanks.(http://i292.photobucket.com/albums/mm21/davidf121/image.jpg3_zpsgghf8tpu.jpg) (http://s292.photobucket.com/user/davidf121/media/image.jpg3_zpsgghf8tpu.jpg.html)

Started on my dash. The wiring harness from vwmis great but I'm still intimidated. Will slowly peck away at it. First question on you guys that have already done your dash. I'm getting ready to run tubing for the oil pressure guage on the French cluster, how long is that first hard line suppose to be.it looks like a compression fittig going into the guage is the other end a standard double flare that goes into the first braded line. I just double check the guage and its bigger then the 1/4 inch line.are you guys using an adapter with the French cluster.Thanks.

-
Looks good. There are a lot of wires in the kit, but one at a time should get you there ;).

Finally got around to pulling off the rest of the copped up rear bed. It's a shame most of the rear track armor only had a foot copped off. The frame only the last 6 inches. Have a donor piece for the frame will have a friend do that welding. Plan on pulling off the idler shafts anyone have any hints. Have to pick up a socket for the inside nuts.the good thing is not much more has to be pulled of or cleaned. Mybe by the end of the summer I'll be ready for a rear floor from outsider..

-
it's a nice basic work,
sheetmetal few hours and it will be like new :P
-
I pulled my rear posts out and they were stubborn. I used a combination of heat, a big hammer and a 10 ton bottle jack. I would have preferred a porta power, you will need the stubby attachment. I started to push them out of both mounts on the frame, inner and outer. It was easier to unbolt the outer and just push them out of the inner and work with the outer later. They do go back together much easier.
Gary
-
Finally have the rear frame somewhat back together. Will have a friend come over and burn the pieces in. I can weld ok but I'll have someone who knows what he's doing do the important stuff.
(http://i292.photobucket.com/albums/mm21/davidf121/image_zpsxydoo2td.jpeg) (http://s292.photobucket.com/user/davidf121/media/image_zpsxydoo2td.jpeg.html)

-
Looks good, I have to do the same on critical parts. I can melt metal but that's about it ;D. I see you removed the rear idler posts too.
Gary
-
Yes I figured while I'm in there might as well get everything set for an easier time later.
-
Finally welded the last six inches on and bolted crossmember and mounts into place. Feels good to have the frame whole again, another off the check list started years ago. Have to install idler pivot shafts and they are with in a couple of thousands of each other the next problem is the casting on the left side is worn about 80 thousands out so its like a sausage in a hallway deal. What have you guys done. Gone new or just have it rebushed. Was also able to pick up a used bumper assembly so now I'm just going to use the whole asembly and sell the etentios I pick up off of Gary. They be in the sale section. Thanks guy.

nice assembled, the frame takes shape :)
-
I think I posted in the past three schematics for halftracks. Also, in the Halftrack Base Shop Data Book, the last section is on electrical and has some great drawings on wiring the dash.
Steve A.
-
That looks like a nice bumper. I had my castings bored and bushed, they were egg shaped. I can't remember how much, but my shafts were a little worn so I also had my shafts turned down just to true everything up.
Gary
-
Thanks guys
-
Got around to getting the old front roller bumper of so no more frame sections to clean and paint.front radiator armor had a hole cut where the winch shaft went though thanks steve for posting measurements so I could drill and patch the armor.have left over roller bumper parts that aren't in great shape but if you could use them let me know.

Hi Empty

there is not a steel plate between the spring supports the extension and winch frame

or it is a difference between small and large springs ??

I know thanks though prestone. The gusset fro the winch bumper was between there. Will trim and cut it when I reinstall the frame extensions. Lots of rivets there no fun.

Got around to messing with the brakes. Installed a newer hydro vac and plumbed most of it up. Have a couple of leaks that need fixing. I also picked up idler shaft fro machine shop. He had to weld the shaft and bore out the casting now no more hotdog in the hallway. Still messing with the engine will pull off the valve covers and se what's what hopefully that's the issue. Thanks again for the help guys.

-
Your project is looking real good. Don used the same kit for Zelda. It went together real good. Steve did a great job making that kit.
Steve A.

The kit looks great. It looks like there is plenty of shade under the tree for painting. The painted part looks good.
Gary

Chipped away at some more work. Finally got everything painted and managed to clean up the rear differential. So can start putting parts back on.

Got started on the front spring packets. Took them all apart and cleaned and painted. Found bushings at a spring shop near by. For anyone who’s interested the bushing size is id 7/8 od 1 1/8 x 2 1/8 frame shackle is I’d 7/8 od 1” x 2 1/8. Will be doing the steering boots soon.

Thiese two brackets where bolted to the armor on both sides near the pioneer tools. Are they for a halftrack.

Just finished the first tank and it was a real tig welding learning experience. Started the second one and that one is goin much easier just have to get some fittings. Goofed up and put the baffle on the wrong side of the tanks. Not going to cut them open and redo. Question about the sending unit. Where it bolts to the tank doe it just sit on top level with the tank or is it recessed in the tank a little. The senders will be towards the rear of the track instead of in front. The tank covers should hide it.

Finally finished my fuel tanks, I know the sending units are on the wrong side. Was to far into the build to switch around must have had a dyslexic moment. Will see how install turns out.

Haven’t gotten a new photo hosting site since photobucket tried to put the scores to me, so just written update. Finally gave up on the old engine and picked up one from sindorf trading in the Netherlands. Really nice piece of kit. Painted it and took the clutch apart so it wouldn’t stick. Installed it and what a world of difference, was able to pull a steady vacum and ran pretty good. After the crb filled up she started on the second try. Installed the radiator and armor. Tighten the important stuff up and put the old tracks on this weekend. Finally took her out for her first drive on Sunday.had the pit crew and some fire extinguishers along. She ran great and smoothed out 3/4 of the way through the trip around the neighborhood. Ran her for about 20 minutes. First time I was able to drive her since I picked her up 7 1/2 years ago. What a great feeling. Now I have a long punch list of stuff to take care of before she almost done ( their never quite done ever). Also started making my own auto car nuts they aren’t perfect but will pass the 3 foot sniff test. Hopefully I’ll have pics and videos soon, can’t quite figure out the 503 picture site, anyone have a better site for picture and video hosting. Thanks a lot guy for all the help over the years and up to this point and especially Steve for starting this site. Will keep you updated.

Congrats on the engine, I know it felt great to have the track out moving again after so long. Wish I had access to a tig.

Started messing with gun mounts, just about done with m25 pedestal. Sooner or later I’ll give the college try at the rear seat backs and mine racks. Nice to be picking away at the punch list now.
