Title: Carburator damage

Ok,  carbs are new to me but since I have 2 I thought I would rebuild one and see how it went. In the end it helped it but was not close to perfect. Question here is what did the damage to the ends of these pipes?

You can see instead of being perfectly round it looks like someone hit with a hammer. Backfire?

This is a post war French. 

My other carb is post war French nos and runs horrible.  Makes no sense but I'm learning.  Or I'll just give up and have it rebuilt soon.

Its interesting what happens to these parts over the years. I pulled apart my carb to start rebuilding it and the cylinder for the plunger in the center was smashed. I have to find a way to round it back out so I can reassemble the thing. So much fun!

I have seen damage like this on race cars. Flooding condition in the mainifold followed by a fire. Carb metal has a low melting point

Thanks. That is probably it.  I noticed my carb does not have a spacer that I've seen people mention.  That might help future overflows/fires. I assume the spacer was there from the factory?

Humm i dont believe mine has a spacer, anyone else have one?

Yes I have one, When I got my ht it had an original on it. It fell apart when I tried to take it off to work on the manifolds. Made due for a while with something I found at the local auto parts store, but I just replaced it with an excellent repro one that I bought on eBay that was recently discussed on this forum.
