Title: Question about cam and crank gears
Post by: coreyelliott on August 27, 2018, 09:01:01 PM
We are in the process of assembling our engine at the moment and came across a situation where we weren't comfortable with assuming that we knew the answer.  So of course I come here first.

I know that when you mate the cam  and crank gears, you are supposed to line up the "X" marks for proper valve timing.  Makes complete sense and no problems there.  However, are those markings specific to each engine?  If I use the crank/gear from one engine and mate it up with a cam/gear from another engine, can I still line up the "X" marks or do I need to look into timing the cam manually.  (Please don't say I have to do that)

Thanks,

Corey

I believe you would be fine with using parts from different engines. I am away from home right now,but I believe the cam gear has a key way. So the gear may only fit on one way. So to be sure check the engine manual. As I am not 100% sure and you can always check the valve timing to make sure.if I was home I would be able to check as I have an engine torn down at the moment, but the cam and crank are still in place.
