The greenest of the O.D.
« on: May 08, 2018, 10:27:34 PM »
I’ve got a 1943 m15a1. After blasting off layers of civilian paint, I found the original green to be more green than some OD paints. Anyone know which of the many O.D. paints was the most green (less brown, less tan). I would like to use the g503 brand, 33070 ?

I use lots of that paint on my halftrack and Ron Fitzpatrick is a great guy to deal with. I thin it with laquer thinner at a 3 to 1 ratio, no driers added. Works great and easy to touch up I use lots of parts from him in my halftrack.

Most people use some sort of red oxide primer. Myself and Don use a product from Nason called SelectPrime 1K part number 491-22. This is an industrial gray primer that goes on the same way as the OD color. I'm using my friends old SATA spray gun and 3M's PPS spray cup system for ease of cleanup and storage of unused paint.

Clep.

It's possible that the green that is on the track is a post WW2 paint job??  For my restoration I used RAPCO's red oxide primer and paint
From their site:
33070 Early WW II Lusterless Olive Drab Most common color for Pre-War thru 1943. A little darker than 319 & 34087
319 Late WW II Lusterless Olive Drab Most common color for 1944-45. A little lighter than 33070 & without the khaki tint of 34087
34087 Lusterless "Khaki" Olive Drab Most commonly used on restorations throughout WWII. It is similar to 319 but with a brownish Khaki tint

You can order a can of spray paint in each color for 6.95 each and see what meets your project needs.  I went with 34087 for the track but used the other two to paint mines, jerry cans, MG mounts to mix it up.
