Door inner handles screw size
« on: September 08, 2014, 04:33:44 PM »
Hi all,

A quick question: I'm after the screw size for the inner door handles on the scout car and half tracks.  I'm pretty sure they are the same for both.

I have two inner handles here but no screws and I can't find anything in my collection of bits and pieces that will fit the thread.

Can anybody advise please?

Thanks.

Hi Darryl, it going to be a machine thread, either 10-32 or 8-32, I have to go and check mine tomorrow and let you know for sure.  Not metric for you folks from down under! If you don't have access to English fasteners check with Al Brass in Christ's Church big time Jeep guy might have some spare fasteners floating around!

Hi Don

Thanks for that.  They appear to be a different size to the screws that hold the windshield rubber and I think those ones are 10-32.  I'm sure I'll be able to get something once I know what I'm looking for.

Many thanks

i depends on which handle you have.

here are 3 original handles.

the first (greenest) handle i believe is post war. i purchased this from Yamulla Enterprises.
it has a round head slotted screw 8-32x3/8

the second original (green) handle has a round head slotted screw 8-32x5/16

the third handle has a 12-24 thread, i dont know the length.

Thanks Steve,

It looks like I have the same first two handles that you have there.  I got one of them from Dave Yamulla; the other I think came with the vehicle.

I have seen these screws advertised in New Zealand and by the looks of things, these 3/8" ones will do the trick?

I am not familiar with the 8-32 sizing.  Are these deemed to be a UNC thread?

Thanks.

It is a UNF thread. 24 would be UNC. It is a standard screw and thread pitch in the US.

Hi all,

Thanks for the replies.  The screws I saw in NZ were UNC so don't appear to be suitable.  I was going to order some from McMasters from those links you've provided along with some rubber seal for the windshields as per the info here: http://halftrackinfo.com/index.php?topic=312.0  ,  but it appears McMasters  won't ship internationally.

I'll check out Ebay and see what options I come up with.

Thanks for all the assistance.

Cheers,

Darryl if you can't get it figured out I'm sure you could order it and have it shipped to someone here. Or let me know what you need I can buy it at my local fastener store and ship it to you.

Hi Don,

Thanks. Yes, I found their response a little strange and wouldn't have thought 20 feet of rubber bulb seal and two packets of screws would be so problematic. Apparently I can't even order them and get them sent to my freight forwarder in Oregon who would then send on to New Zealand:

"The US Department of Commerce has complicated regulations covering the sale and documentation of products exported from the US.  Those regulations apply whether the products are shipped directly outside the US or somewhere within the US for later transport.  The Department of Commerce classifies both kinds of transactions as exports and imposes the same requirements for documentation and review.  Because of those requirements, McMaster-Carr only accepts international purchase from our established customers overseas.  We apologize for not helping you further."

Many thanks for your offer though Don, and I will keep it in mind.  I will keep hunting around and see if can find a supplier for the same rubber bulb seal for the windscreen who will ship to NZ. I'm also taking Steve's advice for the slightly longer 10-32 Thread, 3/8" screws with that rubber bulb seal.

I spoke to some local fastener suppliers here and both seemed to think the  8-32 screws were a UNC thread so maybe what we have here is a little different.  I'm not sure. My other option is simply to retap the two handles for a metric machine screw.  Not ideal, but that might be a little simpler when it is just two screws involved!
