Help with brake light?
« on: June 28, 2017, 03:35:13 PM »
Can someone tell me which of the two contacts in the top receptacle is for the brake light? The base of the light is loose and spins in the housing and needs to be re-soldered. Both filaments work but the base may be oriented 180 degrees out of phase with the connector. I don't have the connector yet and before I solder it I need to know which side is for the brake light and which is for the tail light. Thanks.
Jon

If it's a dual filament bulb it shouldnt matter. A circuit is a circuit. Either will filament should be usable for a brake light or tail.

When I tested the light, one side looked brighter than the other and I assumed it was the brake light. Maybe I got that wrong though. I'll take a closer look. Are they both the same then and the brake just adds a second filament?

I fired up the light again and one filament is definitely at least half again brighter than the other. I assume it's the brake side. The picture doesn't show the filaments clearly because I'm an even worse photographer than I am half track mechanic, but you can see the one side of the light is quite a bit brighter than the other. I just need to know which side of the connector is the brake side so I can position the light base accordingly. Thanks again.

Looking at the back of the bulb, the terminal on the left is the brighter(brake) light on one of my bulbs that I tried.
