Just pulled my rear pumpkin, am i in trouble?
« on: May 07, 2012, 02:11:16 PM »
Hey guys, this is what greeted me when I pulled the rear gears. Should i put diapers on and poop myself or is it not as bad as i think?

Yep, you had some moisture in the case. Looks like no teeth missing on the ring gear. Check both gears if you have all your teeth it's not that bad. I would bring it to a local HD truck rebuilder and have them put all new bearings in it, because if they are pitted from rust or the rust residue starts grinding away in them they won't last long and could wipe out the ring and pinion gears (that's bad). Also make sure you pull both wheel hubs and put new bearings in them too as they probably are rusty as well.

to me it really doesn't look that bad. i would just pressure wash everything and put it back in if it spins smooth. those bearings will cost alot to replace.
i have seen alot worse work just fine but it depends on your risk tolerance and pocket book. i take risks and have no money  ;D

Thanks guys. I dropped of my pumpkin to the shop i deal with regularly. Hes good and said he wasn't concerned with the gears either. He will go thru the bearings though and see how they are. I assume bearing are available if needed?
