re-ferbing a rusty roller
« on: May 06, 2013, 11:16:51 PM »
Hi all. as you can see I am new to your group.  I'm looking forward to getting to know you all and get some good advice on my project.
I just picked up a roller for the front and as you can guess it is rusted up from sitting out in the weather for 70 years.
I am tring to break it down, clean it up and mount it on my m2.
Does anybody have any suggestions to get the guide rods off of the roller shaft.  Yes I did get the pins out, but it seems that the shaft and guide rods are rusted together.

Thanks for the help,

LS

You are lucky you got the pins out. I haven't been able to get mine to budge. As far as the guides I would sugguest putting on a BIG puller then lots of heat. Heat and pull, and repeat. Oh and stay out of the line of fire.

Along with heat, I used a lot of penetrating oil and a heavy duty air hammer and time. I put the p oil on then would hammer back and forth, let it soak and repeat. I also took the shafts out of the crabs this way. Good luck
