electronic ignition
« on: November 28, 2010, 12:36:10 PM »
A couple years ago I saw a halftrack for sale and it was advertized as having electronic ignition installed. I have always put Pertronics ignitions in all of my vehicles when possible and would like to do that to my halftracks. I even have one in my WW2 WLA Harley, what a difference it makes. Has anyone here put an electronic ignition in there halftrack distributor and if so what model did you use?

I have not done this yet but have heard it does improve performance on any old point style distributor. All you have to do, from what I am told, is contact Pertronix and give them the Delco distributor number on the metal tag and they will tell you which kit will work. I have not done this yet but plan to. Also, I was planing to use a MSD 6AL ignition control system. This will give multiple sparks per each cylinder ignition along the RPM curve to improve fuel burning and better starting. I've heard nothing but positive things about this in other applications. I think it can be hidden in the coil box.

So, I contacted Pertronix and they told me Kit number 1167 will work for the one piece distributor. If someone has a 2 piece distributor I need the number to figure witch kit will work with it.

Well, I'm going to try the Pertronix module and coil set up. I have a non-shielded distributor, 1110174 10750, and using a Pertronix 1168LS kit with a 40511 3.0 ohm fluid filled coil or 40611 3.0 ohm epoxy filled coil. (I had problems with the fluid filled coils leaking in the horizontal position) This should help out in the spark department. I also have a MSD 6AL spark module that I may try in the future. Will post update after install.

Probably going this route.  Any downsides to those who use it.  I got stranded this weekend with some burnt up points

points are always easy to change out and set vs. electronic ignition going bad you dont have a back up when no spark and in a parade,   a few jeep guys went this way , soon went back to points after electronic issue accured.  carry spare points and coil in vehicle.   also most Auto parts store carry points vs electronic if stranded.  my 2 cents

I have had my electronic ignition in for two years now with no problems. Don is putting it in his halftrack too. it is a easy install and can be done in a half hour or less. I do recomend getting the matching coil as per manufacturer.

Got mine installed and working perfect. Just don't forget to keep the old parts in the track and you won't need a tow home someday. Also a spare coil.

I dropped this setup into halftrackie before it's first start. Dropped right in and the engine starts right up with barely a crank!
