fuel gauge questions
« on: October 18, 2014, 07:16:59 AM »
Trying to get my fuel gauge working.  To save time I'm hooking it up while the cluster is still in place. There is no positive/negative side to it right? Either way should work? I can't see the back of the gauge for markings. Is there a modern correct replacement part available for this if it's bad? Doubt it but thought I would check.

The fuel gauge if you look at the wiring diagram it has a hot lead going to the gauge,  then it runs to the tank selector switch. Then to the sending units The best way to check if the gauge is to hook 12volts to one side then ground the other side it should go to full. I don't think there are any commercial replacements. Although that gauge cluster was used on many different applications however the faces are different and it is matched to the sending unit. Possibly a good gauge shop could repair it if it is bad.

1/2 day shot but the needle was bent against the face of the guage.  Tapping would move it some but I had to take it apart to bend the needle.  Moves freely now.

Thanks

These guage clusters were made by stewart werner and are fairly common in older trucks. I believe the Mack trucks used them until sometime in the 1960's. The only difference is that Mack had their logo and paint colors to match their application, so you would have to re silkscreen the face. I think the ford trucks from the 40's used something very similar but would have to check to be sure. I recently recieved a Summit racing catalog in the mail. In the section of retro guages there was a guage cluster that looked like the halftrack ones, but of course the face was pained white. I think it was about 450.00. I will find that page and try to copy and post it. If they could be silkscreened cheap enough that may be a good source for guage clusters in the future.

I was wrong about the instruments in Ford trucks and Mack trucks. The instrument panels are different. However I was able to find the info about the gauge cluster in the summit catalog. They are New Vintage USA Woodward Series Analog Gauges. Part no. NVU-27205-02. If the face was repainted to look like the halftrack gauges it would be tough to tell the difference. I hope the link works.

The name of the company escapes me but a heavy equipment company used that gauge cluster also.

that gauge is listed as a 4 3/8" gauge
halftracks are 5"

I thought the 4-3/8 might work if it did not fall through the hole or maybe it could be shimmed. After looking more I found one made by Stewart Warner it is cheaper and has a black face but it is the same company that made the originals and it is 5 inch.

Here are some wiring and troubleshooting guides for scoutcar and halftrack gauges. I will post the entire set of pages relating to gauges in a separate post. I hope this helps.

Also, David Yamulla at Military Vehicle Supply has most US individual gauges NOS in stock. He is out of the oil pressure gauge. He also has NOS French gauge clusters complete. They are identical to the US except they are black and silver.

yes
David Yamulla at Military Vehicle Supply is the best way to go for a complete cluster.
he also has the fuel tank sending units. these are a 0-400 ohm sending units, i have never found anything but nos units that will work.
here are a couple fuel gauges that may fit but the ohms will require you to use a different sending unit. they are easy to get.

make sure your gauge and sending unit are grounded to each other and the ground
