White 160AX/civilian white engine question?
« on: January 23, 2017, 08:58:15 PM »
Hello.  I am thinking about replacing or rebuilding my engine in my M2A1.  I have a question about the White engines, military and civilian.
Is there a civilian engine that would be the same as the original engine in my halftrack?  If I was to look for a civilian White engine, what models would it be?
I know White used flathead engines in trucks/buses,tractors, etc after WW2, and maybe before.  So if i could fine a white flathead, is there a model that would be a good fit for my halftrack?  And would everything bolt up too it? Like water pump, bell housing, starter, etc. etc. etc.  anyone out there a expert on these engines, and know what to look for?  And if there is a way to identify the correct engine, where and what would I look for?  Serial numbers?  Castings?  Thank you.  John

Steve-0 posted an answer to this question in 2010 under the engine tab - His answer below.

The military White halftrack had a 160AX engine and is the same as the civilian 250A internally. The halftrack engines were either factory model 160AX or factory 150A rebuilt and rebadged as 160AX engines. 150A and 250A engines used an SAE 3 bell housing. the 120A engine will also bolt up in every way as the 160AX but be ready for a real gutless halftrack. they also made a 130a and a 140a but i dont have good info on them. i have pulled this information off of truck boards that specialize in the white truck.

Yes, I read that..  doesn't really say which one/if any, would fit.  Hoping someone has more information on this topic, or has been down this road before and did the research, on which/if any, white engine would be a good fit, and what all would need to be done. I found a guy that has a couple different white flathead engines, but don't want to make a deal with him unless I know for sure it would work in my halftrack, without doing any modifications.  (I want the track to have the correct engine internally/externally).  Was there any of the 160AX using in any other vehicle other than the halftracks?

If I understand this correctly White continued to make the 160Ax after the war but with a different head and it was referred to as the 'Mustang'. I think it might have been emptyhead that had one installed in his HT when he got it if you check his resto thread. I'm guessing that would not work for you since the head looks A LOT different iirc.

I'm doing an in frame rebuild of the 160AX in my 16A1. I wanted to buy a new crate motor but just can't afford it but the motor topic is on my mind. So far so good, pulling the pistons today.

In the early 70's I was at Southern Parts with my Dad and in their storage yard were probably at least 100 halftracks with full rear armor but no motors. I have a vague memory of Tommy Hunt telling my Dad they sold the motors to truckers for replacement Mustang motors.

Having just finished my engine, I can tell you that there is not much out there in the civilian market for parts. I got a few one off sets of bearings and what not off of ebay, but everything else was obtained through Gary, Rod or Kevin. I've searched for 160AX extensively on the web, and have just not been able to find anything.

Thank you.  I ended up breaking my wallet open and purchasing a rebuilt engine from BAIV.  I was luck enough to have one of these engines before, and they are really nice.  Now I have a spare motor that I can rebuild later, or sell... The new engine should be here in about a month... I have found a guy that has a few white engines, but cant seem to find the model number on it.  It looks very similiar, but oil cooler is not the same.  I don't want to take a chance and it not being correct, so I played it safe and went with the French rebuild one... at least this way my track wont be down for months during a rebuild.  Thanks for your reply, and if I find out anything on these other engines, I will post what I find.

Ya I had the mustang engine in my track when I received it it was basically the same layout as the 160 mine had 450 stamped in the block. It had a different head, manifold, intake. Front engine mount was the same but the rear mounts off the bell housing where a little short as far in the with department but the tranny bolted right up to the engine and bell housing. Let us know how the rebuild you got from biav is. How much was it to ship to the us. Cheers
