Harness/Frame grommets?
« on: September 21, 2017, 11:03:47 AM »
Hi All,
As I'm getting more and more into the details of my restoration I'm finding I'm coming up with more specific questions regarding the the finer points of my restoration.
I've searched the goggle to see if I can find the grommets that shield the wiring harness that passes through the frame under the fender for the headlight wiring.
I've found some but have to order ridiculous quantities. Does anyone have a better source or maybe a couple in their spare parts bin? Or maybe another idea for isolating the wiring from the frame?
Thanks,
Mark

Hi Gary,
I'm looking for the grommet that passes through the frame rails in which the headlight wiring passes through.
Let me know if you might have a couple.
Thanks,
Mark

If you can let me know the diameter of the hole and if its just the thickness of the frame. I have pedastals and they used a metal bushing where the wires pass through. I have used rubber grommets in other areas of the frame so I should have something.

Hi Gary,
Steve gave me a call yesterday, and he does not recall seeing a grommet(or remnants of one) in this particular location, so I'm just going to leave the harness bare at that point. If I get to thinking its an issue I can always retro fit something. Thanks for the offer though!

there is a grommet there

just go to McMaster
the ones in the pics are split (cut so they are easier to install or to install after the wiring is in place)

Thanks for the photos steve. No luck at McMaster. Options are pretty limited due too the thickness of the frame.

I'll take a look at my grommet stock pile and see if I have anything.

here is what I would do

buy these (or some like them)
https://www.mcmaster.com/#9307k874/=19ivw7g

take 2 of them and cut one flange off each
use some superglue and glue them together in the installed position.

I would not glue them together and then try and install but that may work just as well.

superglue bonds rubber very well
it is a common method of making orings for big hyd cylinders

So there are two ways that the harness goes through, the steel frame fitting and the rubber grommets.

Emptyhead, see Steve-0's photos. That's what I'm referring to. I'm going to try the superglue method and see how that works.
