I am thinking of using the coil box that wax originally on my track when I recovered it. It was not being used as the coil is on a bracket mounted under the last 2 headbolts on drivers side. The resister in the box is in good shape .. I assume the resister was used for coils that did not have an internal/built in one. Is anyone out there using that resister in the box? Was thinking of bypassing it and using the coil I have on the track now.. but if someone is using the original setup, what brand/type coil are you using?

A picture of what you're talking about might help. But, as far as I can remember, there was not originally a resistor in the coil box. There is a large coil radio filter in there though. Maybe you're thinking of that?

Here's a picture I quickly made. The red circle is the radio filter coil and the green circle is a condensor/capacitor. Both were used to help mitigate radio noise.

Mark,
If you have a coil bracket and coil on the last two head bolts then when your halftrack went through a rebuild and the radio shielding was discontinued and replaced with radio suppression using various condensers on components and resistance spark plug wires. This was very common as the shielding components were hard to maintain and time consuming to do any engine work. This was also true with the fresh air vent tubes on either side. Over time both were discontinued as they were always in the way when working on the engine. There is also a different cylinder head used in later production where the coil bracket bolts to the head near the distributor with two bolts. This is when the flangless distributor was used. This also eliminated the need for the coil box and other shielding components.

Steve, yeah my track was rebuilt in 52 .. wire diagram has the wire from the ignition going to the suppressor and then to the coil..was just wondering if anyone was using the original wire setup and the coil box .. what's weird is the fact that the old coil box was still in place on my track even though it was not being used ..will just leave it as it is.. she runs and starts right up always.

Mark K: I have only had 1 Half-Trac with the coil mtd to engine. All the others have had the coil box. All my restored units run the coil box.
