Registration for a halftrack in Calif.
« on: March 14, 2020, 07:46:21 PM »
I had nothing but a bill of sale and a 1972 New York registration card and plate.
Step 1: Send a form and $10.00 to New York DMV to verify “no record on file”
Step 2: Fill out “statement of fact” pleading my case.
Step 3: Give DMV $900 in tax, registration, weight fee. Get temp for window
Step 4: Have private vin verification guy come to house. Don’t go to CHP.
Step 5: Drive HT 15 miles to certified weigh station (11200 lb, no rear armor)
Step 6: Drop off all paperwork at DMV and get commercial plates and weight stickers for doors.
Step 7: Drive HT anywhere you want at any time. You have normal plates and are not restricted.

DMV and CHP never saw my halftrack, so they never got nervous about giving me the OK. I started out with old paperwork calling it a 1968 White. It is a 1943 Autocar. It all got fixed.

Great job Mike!! It's probably good they didn't see the hand grenade hood ornament. If you have a day to kill and plenty of gas money, drive it on down here.

You might want to consider changing to historic plates in the future.  First off, registration is much cheaper-I think mine is less than $100/year vs close to thousand each year for commercial.  Second, insurance is much cheaper-less than $300/yr vs commercial truck insurance.  Lastly, you don’t ticketed for non-upgraded safety features-for example, I’ve been stopped for having only a single tail light.  Keep a copy of the Motor Vehicle Handbook in the truck, pull it out when stopped and show the officer the statute pertaining to his complaint.  If the truck is per the original design there is nothing they can do.  I understand your desire to drive where and when you want, but I’ve never had a problem driving around.  Remember the law says you have to use the truck ”primarily” for events, and this is also understood to mean you can drive it for diagnostic or after repair checkout runs.

My insurance is $150 a year. My yearly registration should be far less than $900 as you only pay the sales tax portion once, and I got the weight down to 11200 pounds. I added additional tail / brake / turn signal lights. I was a traffic cop for years.

In Oregon we only have a one charge for historic plates, the big thing is getting the title. The local DMV gets caught up on the SF 97 thing. No such thing in  the 1940’s
