Wiring harness
« on: December 02, 2020, 03:26:34 PM »
Just received complete wiring harness from Vintage Wiring. Just wondering if anyone had any advice to maybe save me some headaches. I’m to old and fat to climb under dash so thinking about pulling armor on top of dash. Waiting for starter to get back from shop before I start project. Anyone been there done that?

Mike,

It's best to pull the dash out and install the harness with the dash on a bench and upside down.  Taking the top armor off helps when you re-install the dash and connecting some wires and other hook ups BUT getting my dash armor off was one of the most difficult operations I encountered!!!

Agree with what Paul said above.
Dash much easier to wire when out and on a bench.

But pulling the top armor was a chore on my half track as well.
A lot of rust due to being horizontal in the weather all those years.

Attached is a shot of mine during disassembly. Found just drilling off the bolt heads
worked pretty good.

Have fun!!

If you plan on trashing your bolts anyways...you can take grade 8 nuts and weld them to bolt heads. Much easier using a impact gun ..

Got hood and dash armor off today all by my lonesome. Went pretty easy, bolts had been taken out before from last restoration.

Mike,

Glad it came off easy.  You also lucked out that the top of the wiring cover was modified and you can access the wires much easier. You still might want to remove the dash since you'll be doing a lot of climbing in and out and it is a tedious process.

You're off to a good start!

Mike, here’s what I did,

Another suggestion I hooked up a low amperage power supply to check functions. Saved me a lot of headaches.

MD, lucky you regards those bolts .. just pushed my tired and fat body between the gear shifters etc and wired mine up .. itn2as to much ass pain to pull the armor and dash .. was not easy, but everything works LOL.  AGREE with what Don said regards using a low voltage source to check stuff ..
Good luck with your project!

Got a question, decided to take horns off to clean 77 years of crud off and paint before installing new wires. Found on forum that horns are to be painted black but mine are orange, believe they are original so what’s up with that? Also still finding blue paint under HT in places that could not have been repainted

We’ll decided to go orange, horns had separate button to activate installed by previous owner. Got new wire through steering column and horn button on steering wheel cleaned, hopefully it will work. Thanks to forum found out how to take off horn button on steering wheel, 1/6 0f a turn and popped off. Got front and rear harness ran and all lights hooked up. This is not a restoration just more of a maintenance thing, won’t be getting it judged at nationals next year.

The horns should be black. All the NOS Delco horns I have owned have been black. Just FYI.
