Water pump seized
« on: August 15, 2011, 07:48:13 AM »
My White M2 halftrack finally arrived and have been pouring over the good and the bad all weekend. Managed to get the engine to turnover freely but looks like the water pump is seized solid. Ignition wiring is in poor shape so am going to replace that (used the part numbers provided by Steve under the 'ignition' section, so thank you for those !) and just see if the engine will run but looks like I'll need a new water pump.  Any suggestions on the best places to find a water pump ?

I'm a novice on halftracks, so this is likely to be the first of many very basic questions !

Thanks,  Phil.

these water pumps where also used in trucks and busses so i was hoping to find other sources besides halftrack parts dealers but no luck yet. the seals and bearings should be easy to replace with modern parts but i havent needed to do that yet so i dont have any info for that.
tankstogo.com has the best prices for nos, i bought a few of them.

on a side note, if you pull the head and water pump you can pressure wash the the water jackets in the engine out. there's usually a bunch of rust/junk in there especially if its been run without antifreeze.

Thanks for the advise Steve, as based on the rust inside the condensor tank and visible inside the hose connections, seems a fair bet that there's a lot of crud inside the jackets.

If your going to rebuild the water pump you will need one speciality tool. You will need to pull the impeller to get the shaft, bearings and seals out. It all loads from the impeller end. The water pump has ceramic face seals. I machined up a tool to pull the impeller when I rebuilt mine. Looking back buying a NOS pump would have been easier. But the tool worked well and the pump is all rebuilt.

Jon Shoop from Missouri had NOS water pumps at the convention for $125.00 I believe. Email me and I will get you his contact info if you are interested.

Thanks for the help guys but I spoke to the guy I bought the halftrack from and looks like I may already have one ! (he told me there should be a NOS waterpump in one of the rear floor lockers........ :-[ ).  I haven't unloaded all the parts from the rear bed that came with the HT, so seems I may already have one........!  Will let you know if I don't find it over the weekend when I finally get around to shifting the loose top side armor off the rear bed.

HT also came with a NOS radiator, so looks like my first job will be to replace the radiator and water pump and see if I can get the engine running (apparently, it ran pretty good about 8 months ago but had coolant leaks, hence the new radiator and water pump that came with it).

Looks like the block has also been drained as the driver side 'drain valve' (not sure of the correct term) is missing - does anyone know a good source for these ?

Thanks again,

Phil.

Remember what NOS stands for, Nasty Old Stuff (others use a different word for the S). When rebuilding our motor I installed a NOS water pump, ran the engine for several hours after rebuild. The motor sat for over a year without running, I did turn it over by hand several times. After re-installing the motor the NOS water pump leaked like crazy from the main shaft. So a second NOS pump went in and now I run the engine every couple of weeks to keep it fresh. I did install some water pump lube with the coolant also.

I hear you.......my HT came with a NOS front wiring harness but on closer inspection, when I bend the individual cables the insulation starts to crack away, so figure I'll be buying reproductions for wiring and anything rubber !

Appreciate the feedback though, as it's good to know the pitfalls in advance....!

Thanks,     Phil.
