Track molds available
« on: April 23, 2012, 05:11:41 AM »
The last set of halftrack manufacturing molds and equipment in the world are in Israel.  All others in the US and Mexico have been scrapped.  The molds are owned by TGL SP Industries, Ltd, contract supplier of tracks for the Israeli Defense Force (IDF).  The Israelis have abandoned their halftrack fleet and are no longer producing or buying tracks.  But the equipment to make tracks is available for sale.

I don't see how one could make tracks as cheaply as IDF surplus tracks that are currently on the market.  Unless owners of defunct tracks provided their old track metallic innards for retreading.

But making money selling tracks isn't the point.  The point is that if the last track molds are allowed a one way ticket to the recycling yard, there will likely never be a way to make tracks again.  Ever.  And that would be a terrible loss.

I propose that one or some of us pool our resources and attempt to secure the track manufacturing equipment.  Years ago it was offered for $80,000.  Included would have been the machinery and all of the stock hardware such as steel crossbars and stainless cable.  I don't know what price can be negotiated today.  Perhaps less.  Or perhaps we could salvage just the molds.  Maybe they have more than one mold that could be purchased.

There are two who have expressed an interest in this besides myself: Kevin Lockwood and Keith Moore (keith.w.moore@boeing.com).  The way to get this done is for one of the interested parties to go to Israel and talk directly to the man in charge: Tal Dekel, VP, TGL SP Industries Ltd.  His email is tal@pelmar.co.il.  His phone is 972-89935546.  I could contribute something to a joint venture, but not much, and certainly not a significant portion of $80,000 without any hope of return.  I have a lot of time, not much money.  Again, thanks to the idiots we call our government.

If anyone would like to talk about this please contact me, preferably by phone: 410 991-5110.  As a last resort email me at versilia1127@yahoo.com.

here are some pics of the production line along with tracks they made with big bar style.
these arnt original ww2 molds so historical value might not amount to much.
i bet a shop set up to make the similar tractor type tracks could easily reproduce these from scratch with a sample nos track, drive sprocket and hub.
one of us just has to become buddies with the owner of one of those companies  ;D

original equipment.

Has anyone been able to verify the rumor of thousands of surplus tracks in France that was discussed at Tower Park?  Supposedly the cost of importing them is not worth it until the stockpile that Gary has is depleted as the price would be greater than what he is selling tracks for.

Well I will tell you what gary told me. I spoke to him about a two months ago and asked what the going price of tracks were, as some of the magazines were still showing his ad of costing $ 1295 each. He told me that that was a mis-print and they were now $ 2000 each and he had a couple of sets to sell, then he was going up again on his price, and that he had some ultra premo condition ones that were going to be $$$. From the two months ago till now and I just checked his site, he has gone up again on price, $ 2250. Although he did not say anything more about the premo ones or how many he had, other than he did not have as many as he use to. If the price was right and I could somehow scrape up the money then I would buy another set, for a spare, but I can not afford them at his new prices. I guess in the future I will have to pay out the a-- and have them shipped from europe?  I am all for any style track , I dont care what they look like as long as they fit and work. At one time I was thinking about building my own custom style track, kinda like the ones on that tank like vehicle that the Howe and Howe brothers built. All it is is c-channel held together with two steel cables. Some of them have rubber inserts and other don't. All one would have to do is figure out the spacing and you could even mount the factor track guides off the old tracks onto them. For running around on dirt and back roads it would work great.
