Title: Head bolt torque?
Post by: Torque on May 29, 2016, 06:49:28 PM
TM 9-710 on page 139 lists head bolt torque as 195-200 foot pounds. Just got Steves base shop data book and it lists torque as 819-840 inch pounds which is 68-70 foot pounds. The 200 lb must be wrong?, when I first read 200 foot pounds I was suprised those fine thread bolts in cast iron would take it...maybe they wouldn't...so what torque did you use?

I started out at 70 foot pounds and had some weeping. I ended up using some head gasket sealer in the anti freeze and upping the torque to 90 foot pounds hot. I think if you use 200 you will end up snapping some bolts or worse. Just my $.02.

The 1967 Motors truck repair manual I have lists the head bolt torque on the White 150A and 250A as 105-110 ft lb. I assumed they were the civilian version of the AX160 so torque specs would be the same, so...I used 110.
