Title: T steering box
Post by: Hired Goon on August 24, 2016, 02:35:30 PM
I am looking for the T steering box for a scout car, which I understand was also used in earlier halftracks.
It sounds like the TA box is not interchangeable, maybe a different bolt pattern.  Knowing for sure that they are not interchangeable would be a help.
Thanks for any leads.

I used a T steering box from an Autocar M2 on one of my scout cars the number stamped on the box cover plate is T265999.

There is a T262986 cast on the bottom of the steering box and T265999 cast on the cover bolted onto the side of the box that I removed from my car.

That number jives with Don's info and with the other pictures I have seen.

It is clear that the T and TA boxes are not the same size, I am not clear on whether a TA box will bolt onto the scout car frame, whether the mounting flanges are different.  I would not mind making a bracket or replacing a piece of armor with steel clearanced to fit over the bigger box.

No the TA will not bolt up it has a larger diameter frame bracket iirc so you would need to unrivet the entire housing from the frame and transfer it over to the scout car frame. I discovered this after trying to install a TA from an M3 onto a sc. I think I called Gary and he told me one from an M2 would fit and he was correct. Steve has good info on the link he referenced above.
