Title: What oil to use???

I want to do the first engine oil change in my project and not sure which way to go. The oil in it now is pretty clean but I don't know what it is – detergent or non-detergent, or how long it's been in there. I want to use detergent oil but I can't tell the condition of the crankcase - whether it's full of sludge or pretty clean - and so I'm a little reluctant to use it. Any advice on what engine oil to use and what weight? Thanks.

I run 30wt non detergent like the manual calls for. Not had any problems. I know my oil pan is clean because I had it down to work on the engine when I bought my HT.

I would drop the oil pan and check for dirt and sludge. I sell new made oil pan and side cover gaskets.
