Guys,
Sort of a stupid question, but figured I would ask instead of finding out the hard way....

When I got my halftrack (M16), the engine was already out, but transmission still in.
So, I am dismantling the front end, and watching some of the great work you guys are doing (looking at you Steve!).
So, I got the front armor off, and taking the cab out now This is fun as a one person job, I got to tell you!

My question is this...regarding reassembly:
1)  Do I put the engine in first, then the front axle, then the cab, then the front armor, or is there a preferred order to make it as easy as possible?
2)  Do I put the engine and transmission in as a unit, or individually?  If individually, which one goes in first?

Thanks in advance...hope I don't sound too stupid here...

Nothing stupid about it! You might want to check with Steve A. to see if he has any more copies of the Base Shop Data manual. There’s a lot of good information in it. I attached a couple of pages from it showing some of the sequences you asked about. I had to crop them way down before the site would take them. I hope this helps.

you can put the front axle in first or last but I would put it in first unless you have very stable jack stands.

then put the engine in.
then the transmission in.. keep the clutch lever off the transmission until installed... also remove the pto if your left side cross member mount is riveted on instead of bolted

the cab should be put on after all the engine and cab work is done including dash wiring

A part of it is what are you lifting the engine with?  I used a HD engine hoist and it was still a little scary. I had the axle in but the wheels off. The engine has to be lifted pretty high to clear the frame.  After that install trans/tcase etc.. When I put in the transmission I used 4 long bolts with the heads cut off. These helped with aligning the trans to the block, especially if you are working alone.

As far as installing the engine, here is my (hare-brained) plan:
--my neighbor has a big old John Deere tractor--gonna use it as the 'hoist' to lift it and place it in...

As I often heard when I was holding Article 15 night court:  "It seemed like a good idea at the time"

I've read that they're crowding 1500#, depending on the accessories attached.
