Title: pedestal headlight guards
Post by: steve-0 on February 14, 2011, 12:13:19 AM
my business was steel fabrication until things slowed down. anyways i made up a bunch of pedestal headlight guards a few years ago, they even have the part number stamped on top.
i also am going to fabricate fuel tanks for my 5 halftracks that i will some day need and will make extras if anyone is interested. they will be 1/8" thick steel with the rubber wrapped around them. i really liked the ones that where made for the stuart tank that where done like that.
i have a complete fabrication shop with 290 ton press brake, 1/4" plate shear, 90 ton ironworker, mill, lathe ect so when i decide to do it, it will happen.

pedestal headlight guards
$100 per set
$20 shipping anywhere in the US

sorry tom
i made these up to trade with and for my restorations. i really wasn't planning on getting into the halftrack parts business. you can see that i have over 200 posts and only the last couple have things im selling for myself. im getting more interested in making reproduction stuff though. i think i can make a great looking fuel tank.

i have 5 sets of headlight guards available at this time. i can make more if need be.
i will be using the US postal service so your address or p.o box for shipping is ok.
anyone interested can email me
thanks

Just giving you cr@p Steve.  I'll get a check out to you today.

And on a serious note, if you've got the capability and the business is out there why not start producing parts?  You could do it as they are needed/ordered and not carry an inventory...that way you aren't out of pocket and stuck holding stuff you can't unload.

Thanks, Tom

the problem is that it takes alot of time to set up the jigs, press brake, and roll to make these so making two at a time would take alot more time in the long run. what i would like to do is make a few things that are top notch and have a good stock of them.
thanks for your purchase tom
let me know what you think.

Steve,
Guards look good! They should sell well as a lot of guys are looking for them.

On a side note about fuel tanks. Here is a pic of the tanks we made for my HT.
There seems to be two styles of fuel tanks out there. One that is fairly square and one that is more rounded on the corners. The hardest (most expensive) part of making the tanks beside the steel was the fuel cap neck. I bought mine from Gary and paid big bucks for them. Most shops that I talked to about making them were pretty pricey too. Although it would have been cheaper per set to buy them made up I was really only looking for a set for myself. If anyone knows where to get some filler necks cheaper than Gary let me know as I have a friend looking for a pair.
Thanks,
Steve

now thats a good looking tank. the ones that gary sells dont have the correct radius. yours do. and he positioned the filler neck and the sending unit to high. yours is correct and about flush. i have 2 old tanks to work off of but i am also stuck on the filler neck threaded part. how much did he charge for the part (just curious)? im perty sure i will be having that part made as im not experienced enough on my lathe.

I hope you are sitting down. If my memory serves me correct $110.00 each. Quotes I've got to do the threaded part runs about $60.00 each so far. That pic above doesn't have the filler necks installed yet. The one Gary sells have a flange on them so they can be bolted or screwed on. The flange you see in the pic is the mating flange for the filler neck.

Here is a pic of the tank installed. Unfortunately I didn't take any pics of the finished tank before I installed it.

just wanted to mention to others that i wasn't putting garys tanks down, after all i started the post on using boat fuel tanks under the covers and i still think its a great idea and once they are under the covers, who is going to know. i have just been putting alot of thought into making repo tanks and was excited to see outsiders attention to detail.

Steve,

The markings on the pedestal headlight guards - what is the number you are stamping in them.  I can only make out the "C".... what is the rest?  Are you stamping them with different numbers for the left and right?

When I built my fuel tanks, I used the collars from the old tanks - I just cut them out of the rubber, cleaned them up, etc.... it was fun making the tanks.  I lost my photos when my computer crashed so I can't share any photos - I lost all of my restoration photos since I was too dumb not to have backed up my files.

hey thats a good idea rob. the one cap i was able to get off reveled a brass threaded section. was yours brass or steel? how did you attach it?
the part number on the headlight guards is C122143 the guards are interchangeable so the part number is the same for each.

Steve,

Mine were steel.   We removed the steel ring from the rubber tank, cleaned it up, etc....  I can't recall the exact things we did so I will the tanks tonight and post the info.  I had them sealed on the inside with a fuel tank sealer and then had them rubberized to make it look like the old tank - ok, so they are a tad shiner looking but the rubber coating really protects it along with the wood boards.

Ok, thanks..... I thought the original pedestal headlight guards actually had different numbers cast in them.  The ones I have on my track have the same number.  I will check the ord 9 tonight.... with the different part numbers among my trucks, I sometimes forget.

Rob

PS had the track out yesterday driving it around (in PA).... come on spring time!

Steve,

I checked out my fuel tanks last night to jog my memory...  We pulled out all the metal from the rubber tanks - the fuel cap set up, the fuel sender set up, the fuel inlet and the bottom drain plate.   We welded the metal rings inside the new fuel tanks and then screwed the other piece to them - just like the originals.   I had some real nice shots of my tanks next to the originals but as I said before, I lost all the photos.

I checked my Ord 9 last night and here is what I found on the pedestal lights - left headlight guard is listed as part number C-122152, the right headlight guard is listed as part # C-122149.  I am assuming this these would be the numbers that should be on the light guards.  The ones on my track don't match either of these.  My left and right ones are the same number and I forgot what I was able to match that number to.....

Thanks,
Rob

thanks hammerhead
i started building 20 of the fuel tanks. im using 1/8" steel plate, they will have 2 baffles like the originals, the outlet fitting internals will be ducted to the center pickup like the originals. they will be galvanized then warped with 1/16" rubber. the sending unit will be recessed and also dimpled at the drain. the filler port will look just like original. i will only have 4 sets available with covers.
these will be kind of pricey, im not sure how much.
i have been side tracked lately so im not sure when they will be available.
