Hello, all i would like you advice when it comes to the diffrent colors or shade of the olive-drab that is on the market right now.I am starting to work on my half-track and i am starting with the engine compartment as the engine is not in it at this time,and figured i would clean up and paint that area first before installing the engine.I have seen the khaki style and i am not 100 percent sold on it yet, i have also seen the gillespie 33070,it was on a jeep that had just been painted and never spent any time in daylight.So i know that the paint weathers a bit,from the way it looks when painted.My halftrack is a autocar sometime in 1944, m15A1,that i will be restoring into a M3. Please give me your advice and if you want i would love to see some pictures

gillespie 3307 is the stuff i use. it is made by gillespie and sold only to Rapco in Bowie, Texas.
Rapco then distributes to all the people we buy it from. you can buy it direct from Rapco for about $29 a gallon but if you dont live close to TX you will be better off buying from the dealers that are closer to you.

there is also something made by Sherwin Williams called CARC chemical agent resistant coating (CARC)
i think it is harder to get but people say it is better. im going to stay with the gillespie, i don't think CARC has the matching rattle can paint.
do a search on g503 and steelsoldiers for these paints and you will find a bunch of stuff.

Thanks,I ordered two cans of each color from rapco. 33070,34087,and 319. I only painted a few small test pieces, my choice will be between 33070,and 34087. One of the reasons i ask here is ,i have heard some people say that the only correct color for the WW2 halftracks is the 34087. also will have a willys mb to paint someday too.

I'm painting my track gillespie 33070. I like the shade and it seams to work real well when you go back and touch up spots with the rattle cans. I bought a case then had some of it transfered to spray cans. I've been painting the small parts as I'm restoring them.
I bought mine from Ron Fitz. I was at his place so no freight.

The five digit 595 number system came out in 1956. Shades 34087 and 33070 are not WWII shades of OD. Despite hundreds of experts about this subject, they are not correct. They have no actual facts, manuals, paint, etc. Just the faith and trust of what someone told them. I own 17 gallons of unopened OD paint from 5 different manufacturers produced in WWII. I also have one of nine known original WWII paint chip manuals. All of the paint I sprayed out from this WWII paint match the paint chip manual. Check out www.tm9ordnance.com.
There actually is a five digit code from 1956 that is an almost dead ringer for the WWII lustreless olive drab, but it is not either one of the above, and no one makes paint with that code anyway.
Have fun with the halftrack, they are a lot of fun to drive, but sure are noisy. Paul

I have heard good things about tm9 also. Thanks for posting that halifax, it makes this post more complete. I think im going to have to stick with gillespie though. During my restoration there have been so many parts that I can quickly use the rattle cans on. I have also heard of people adding a hardner to gillespie. Has anyone tried that?

I have been using the Gillespie 33070 Paint with a Napa Hardener part number CH 254 and Xylene reducer. The outcome is awesome! A bit more shiny however its so much more durable. With time i'm sure it will fade back to what it should be. Without hardener you can scratch it with your fingernail or even walking on it with deck shoes it will show marks but with the hardener the bead blaster has a tough time knocking it off.
7 parts Gillespie Paint # 33070
1 Part Xylene
1 Part Hardener Napa CH254

I am using TM9's OD6, Pauls been a great help. I have to walk across my frame at times to get at some parts and it does hold up well.

Where is everyone on this subject when it comes to using a hardener for the Gillespie (color 319) paints. I'm ready to start painting the frame on mine, is a hardener really required or in time with or with out will give a durable finish

You don't need hardener for Gillespie.
Actually hardener will make the paint come out more "shinny" than if you use it straight like it's intended.

Guys, I getting ready to paint the stars on the 'track. Living in Canada anyone selling Gillespie paints who have it in white wont ship. I have been buying all my paint from armyjeepparts, they have been great, but dont carry the white. Is Gillespie paint just regular enamel paint like what I could buy from Napa?

Andy I used rustolium flat white on my stars. I would be hard pressed to see a difference in the shades.

I used that paint on my engine, was good. No issues with using over Gillespie paint? Funny must be a Canada thing, its hard to find enamel in a non aerosol paint. Napa said maybe they can. Most places only carry urethane paints.
Was this the paint you all used?

We used Rustoleum flat white for the markings on our HT. After Appling the stencils, I found it easier to shoot a coat of gray primer over the Gillespie #319 before spraying the white.
