Can I pick the brains of the collective and ask the advice of those that have experience of splitting the gearbox and tranny case.
I’ve pulled all the bolts including the 2 inner bolts that are wire locked but I still can’t split the cases. I believe it’s the bearing that’s holding them together but I can’t figure out the best way to prise them apart. I worry that I may damage either case so wondering how others have done it?
-
There are 2 large bolts, one on each side of the case that might be hidden by dirt or grease. If all the bolts are out, the dowel pins are probably all that’s holding it in. The bearings shouldn’t interfere. Some whacks with a rubber mallet should get them apart.

Case.

Thanks, got it split in the end, it was nothing more than a well stuck gasket and some tight fitting parts.

Wait till you have to put it back together. That’s where the real fun begins!????

Not looking forward to putting those needle bearings back in!!
On a tangent, my gearbox, tranny case and PTO were painted green, but I’ve seen them in that Whites grey colour. Would they have been grey from the factory and painted green in an overhaul?
-
I think they were green. In my experience getting the cases back together is far more difficult than the needle bearings.
-
Oh do tell, what nightmare have I got to look forward too? Is it the actual fitting together of the new parts?
-
It’s safe if the manual is followed carefully. The two shafts that stick out the back of the transmission have flats that have to line up in slots In the transfer case. They seem to want to move out of alignment when fiddling with everything else. Always a challenge.

Does anyone know if this part is available?
part no. B184274 (G102-0303070) Gear, transmission main shaft, 3rd and 4th speed clutch (photo attached)
My gear is chipped and badly damaged and ideally I’d like to replace.

I'd start with Kevin Lockwood/col.halftrack. He has a lot of transmission & transfer case parts.
