Title: What to do with a M5 high speed chassis ??
Post by: Tom @ Snake River on July 22, 2013, 08:58:52 PM
I found a complete M5 high speed tractor chassis with track ect.      It has the front drive and the transmission attached.
There is a seat up over the transmission high and in the center.   Steering sticks are origional.   No body, just the chassis.
Can you do anything neat with this other than build back an M5 tractor ????

i think the tracks are interchangeable with the stuart tank.
im not sure if the suspension is. i had an m4 hst and the tracks where the same as a sherman but the running gear was different except for the sprockets.

First off is it M5, M5A1, M5A2, M5A3, or M5A4? They are all similar but different. Different front bumpers and different track configurations will give away which one it is.

Bogies, sprockets, idler wheels and tracks are same as stuart. Suspension is HST only.

Some people have been making replica stuarts from HST's.

Did you ever buy it?

Had a friend of mine that owns a very large parts business, tell me that they had a high speed tractor that was at one of there forgotten storage yards, and the neighbors tried to steal it for scrap metal. I told him I wanted it, and went to look at it. Its a M5A4 model with the ammo storage on the sides. I told him I would like to buy it, but he can not come up with a price, it is not running, someone stole the fan and radiators. I was walking around on the rest of the property, which is very overgrown, and found SEVEN more M5 high speed tractors!  and a few of some very large ,I think M8 tractors  ALL but one of the M5 which is the one I was wanting, is missing the tracks, but the rest seem to be all complete. I have been thinking long and hard , if I really want to buy one, the halftrack parts are hard enough and expensive to find, so I am sure the high speed tractors are worse.

Cool, If there are any M5A1's in there I am looking for some floor pans, a pair of the small mounting casting to hold the clevis's by the rear hitch, and one windshield frame and the arms to swing it out. I am also looking for a set of lower rear doors on the back by the engine. They will be the same as on all the M5 series HST's.

Here are a couple of pictures of my M5A1. M5A3's have the same body, but wider tracks.

http://www.surfacezero.com/g503/showgallery.php?cat=3638    Here are a few of the pictures I took of the one with the tracks, and its the one the neighbors tried to steal.   All of them are this model except two, one is a early model with smooth sides and one is just the frame, the sides have been removed. I have some pictures on my camera, but I am  away at work and the internet is very slow out here to try and upload them right now. It was back in the summer when I was there very hot and full of spiders and wasps. I have been planning on going back now that winter is here and most of the leaves and bugs should be gone to do some more exploring. the yard is about sixteen acres, and I only went through one part of it. Several other unidentified vehicles in there. As well as several trailers full of parts, if anyone needs any M151 stuff let me know as there is tons, I say tons of parts for them, that also goes for 2.5 and 5 ton trucks.  Forgot to add there is several piles of tracks there, I think they fit on the M8 high speed tractors and the Walker bulldog tanks, which if I read correct that's what the M8 was based off of. I think there are several set of Sherman tracks too, any body know any part numbers for them, So I can check on the number stamped into the pads. I think they had a date from the 50s?

I dismantled two of these things several years ago. They were an absolute nightmare to work on. But I wouldn't mind having just the frame rails, transmission, differential and track system again. After I got rid of what I had, I figured out how to convert one into a replica Stuart tank. I wish I could come up one again.
