Title: autocar dash
Post by: HenryVIII on February 13, 2014, 07:38:37 AM
I was looking through my halftrack book and noticed this picture. I always thought it was a picture of a dash on a international track. But I noticed the data plate says autocar on it. some other pics identify the vehicle as M3A2 Serial no.42997 sept 15 1944. its in the book: Halftrack by R.P. Hunnicutt, page 77. Anyway my Question is, I thought that White, Autocar and Diamond T all used the same dash. Comparing pictures the dash in this one is not the same as an IH either but looks very close. Is this perhaps a prototype or something?

Good catch. The data plate says mfg. by Autocar so it should be a AC/DT/White style. If you read the text regarding the M3A2; the rebuilds were performed by IHC on several Autocar M3s (t29) and several IHC halftracks(t31). One of the other photos in the series shows a t29 dash and it seems to be the AC/DT/WT style. Since the IHC dash was actually more like an M-series plug and play dash I bet that was where the ordnance dept wanted to go and since IHC was doing the work to both types (t29&t31) it seems likely they would have made this upgrade.

Boy that would have simplified a few things wouldn't it. Gauges would be alot cheaper and readily availible! Nice photo! Learn something new everyday.

I was just looking...  the windshield wiper arms and blades are still on with the windshield armor down.

I also noticed that it has a clamp for all three prop rods. I hadn't noticed the the windshiel glass is still in.

Yep, all the goodies are on AND the armor is closed.

I had also noticed what I thought was 3 prop rod clamps.
