Pioneer tools on the Halftrack
« on: January 07, 2017, 11:29:43 PM »
Are the pioneer tools on the halftrack the same size/interchangeable as on the Jeep and CCKW?  The shovel, ax, and pick?

Yes. The tools are the same, but straps to anchor them on the vehicle are leather.

Thanks Steve for the reply!  I suspected that but I've seen "halftrack" shovels and axes advertised saying they were different.

Are the picks any different though? Is it a pick head, or a pickmattock like the infantry tool? (is it the same head with just a longer handle?)

Mattock. Not the same as the infantry one.

You can find a picture of all the pioneer tools in the TM9-710 page 86. That section also lists all the spares and their storage locations on all the HT's

Hey Steve, any dealer you would recommend for the Ax, Shovel, and Pick for the HT?  Thanks for any info.

Steve, thanks for that link. I referenced it in the manual, but the photo is not clear enough to tell what the differences are from the infantry pick and the H/T pick.

Halftrack is bigger. You can still buy handles at most hardware store. Though they are getting harder to find as they switch over to the fiberglass ones. I'll try and take some pictures with a tape measure and get them posted up in the next couple of days.

You can find the picks on ebay quite regular along with shovels. The axe is pretty much what you can still buy at the hardware store.

Here are some images from when I was doing research on the mattock...sorry, had to scan printouts as I can't find the digital copy.

Also, here are scans from John Barton's book regarding the shovel and axe....should help you out a little.

tried 3 or 4 different pick handles yesterday, quite the chinese jig saw puzzle, couldn't get any of them to fit.

how come it stuck in my mind that the ax handle was unique to clear the door ?
