I don't know if there was any "correct" size or font. Most of the wartime photos I've seen look like the numbers are mostly 4", just going by the comparison to the hood latches. But there are lots of half-tracks with smaller numbers and letters too. Some are stencil font and some are block font. There are both single-line and stacked numbers. Some with a "W -" prefix and some without. I think it just boils down to a matter of personal preference. If your half-track had radio suppression, it should have a "- S" suffix.
