I can only reply on the shovel bracket. I have the same one on my m16 that I'm doing over to m3. Three shovel holder I guess they wanted the guys to dig the track in deep when they setup for air defense.

I was filling the combat tire today and found out it was completely filled with water like a tractor tire. Was that a common thing??

Mystery of the shovel rack on a M16 A2 becomes clearer with a picture I found on G503 . If you go back to the posts on page 1 of this thread, where I posted pictures of the shovel rack and the running board and wondered what was the purpose of the plate on the running board ( to the right of the footman loop) Looking closely , you can see that the shovel handles now rest on the running board and the low footman loop allows the strap to pull the handles low into the running board. The bracket keeps the handles from sliding backward. The pick and mattock handles can also be seen, ( the heads are in a rack on the other side.) I wish i could see the back to see if there was a door there.
you can also see where the original handle bracket location now has two filler bolts in it.

I also found a engine rebuild tag on the engine under all the grease. it was rebuilt by the Mt Rainier Depot on 3-56 . still no luck with a frame number :

I haven't started wet sanding yet. I have my fingers crossed that something will be there. any idea what that arrow point , pointing down , in a circle , in flat black might have been.?? it's only on one side so probably wasn't original to mine.
