A quick 'Binder' primer.

The M5 is the IH version of the M3 [personnel carrier] and the M9 is the equivalent to the M2 [prime mover]

No ammo doors or skate rail on the IH, longer body than the M2 also. Equal in purpose only, not design

There were both M5 and M5A1 models built but only M9A1......no M9

The difference between the two models is internal lay out, from the outside you cannot tell the difference between them

If it's a wartime pic and there is no pulpit you can be fairly certain it's an M5..... unless there was field mod and it was removed

Thicker armor and not face hardened, less effective but didn't shatter when struck. 7.92 AP round would penetrate @ 200 yards instead of 300

Red Diamond 450 has more power but track is heavier so fairly equal in performance to White design

They were classified 'Limited Standard' and used in training here in the states and shipped overseas to Allied forces

Only produced for one year... 1943

Contrary to books there is proof of combat use in the ETO by US forces, mainly the 12th Armored Division

Very good reply captain thanks. The IH causes a lot of confusion but is a great trac. I know IH used their front axle and was this the reason that 900x20 tires were used? Do you have any knowledge of IH using some white/acc/dt armor (i.e. doors) as pictured for sale here recently??
1941 White M2
1942 White M4A1 was M4
1942 Autocar M2A1
1942 Autocar M3-75
1943 White M13 rebuilt as M16
1943 Diamond T M3A1

I think it would be due to the different gear ratios, 7.16:1 for IH compared to 6.80:1 for White type

All of the body was IH manufacture. Even though hoods are identical to M3, the Binders are thicker. Never checked the rad louvers but would guess the same. Windshield armor is 5/8" compared to 1/2".

There are some shared mechanical parts ... bogey and track drive system, front roller and winch/bumper (different PTO shaft) windshields, wipers, fuel and water mounts...some other trinkets.

The transmissions are similar models but have different part numbers so I would do some homework before a swap. Might be different input shafts.

Never could figure why the lack of interest in them, way more rare than many of the others. I like the flat fenders.

I see this one listed by OP on ebay sold for 19.4K....wow.

I think all the flat armor, even the stuff up front, is thicker than White, Autocar and Diamond-T. I know that the hood armor dimensionally is different as I was helping someone with an international front and wanted to use White pieces for the stuff he was missing and were different sizes. If I remember right the international was a little wider up front than the White. The door armor was different as seen by the one piece pistol port guide. I've seen a Canadian halftrack site where they put a complete White nose on an International. The international M5, M5A1 and M9A1's never had a side ammo locker. An M9 was never made as production changes started right off with the A1 upgrades meaning M49 pulpit.

As I had already stated, it's all 5/16 even the louvers and rad armor...I checked 'em.

Not sure what you were working on but aside from being different gauge the hoods are the same size and shape.

Here's a pic of some White type hood armor sitting on an M5 cadaver I have. Fits nice.
