WTB Idler adjusting screw - Fully Threaded Version
« on: June 08, 2015, 09:35:30 AM »
All,

I am looking for a pair of idler adjusting screws that have the thread cut all the way to the pivot boss.

Looking in the BFG Track Manual there were in fact 3 or 4 variants, I need the last model year so to speak!

The reason is that on my recently purchased HT the track tension is way too tight and with the available thread on my adjusters I can't get the required sag.

The BFG Manual suggests milling the big nut down to 3/4" long, its about 1 3/8" now. I may try that.

Any other suggestions welcome.

I could, as someone suggested relocate the spring perches farther down the frame but I don't want to go that route if at all possible.

TIA

Martin.

Hi, did you ever resolve the tight track problem??? I put new tracks on mine & had the same issue. I ran out of adjustment on the screws & still can't get the required sag. Have left them too tight - thought they might stretch a bit but this hasn't happened. The old ones I took off were too loose so still haven't resolved the issue. I am ssuing theya re only made in one size. Any ideas????

NOS ones are available on eBay if yours are bad. If not bad you can take them to an old school machine shop, more knowledge I think, and have them machine the threads to the end for you. A good machinist can do this. I took mine in and had the threads cleaned but not extended to the end as in the book. I have a NOS set of Israel tracks and worked just fine. Same goes for Don's halftrack. Another reason for stiffness could be in the two springs for the bogies. On some M16 and other gun carriages, as mentioned in the book, they used stiffer springs to compensate for the extra weight. Just my two cents.

I bought one of Garys and just ground down the thick part with a hand grinder until the nut could slide past the threads all they way and it worked OK.

I bought a set from Gary and had them turned down in a lathe so I could cut an extended thread, 1.5in fine thread by hand is hard work!
