Fuel selector stem packing?
« on: June 02, 2017, 11:36:29 PM »
I recently got my fuel selector un-frozen and working again. What a chore! The stems have a rubber washer under each gland nut but they don't seal the stem so gas leaks around them when the valves are open. Is there a specific packing that goes around the stems?

Might want to contact Pat to see what his final solution was.

I used standard rubber o-rings. Work great and didn't cost much.

I use standard o rings also.  They seem to work at partially open, but just to be safe I always fully open the valves.  When fully open, the rings get pinched between two flat surfaces thereby making a positive seal.

Thanks guys. I went to the local hardware store to get either the graphite pump packing or O-rings and came across some stuff called TFE packing string. It's made with teflon, 3/32” diameter and says it withstands aromatic fuels, vibration and extreme temperatures so I thought I'd try it. I just cut off a piece long enough to wrap around the stem with a little overlap, wrapped it above the washer and screwed the packing nut back down. The valves turn smooth and so far no leaks.
