Tachometer problem
« on: November 08, 2010, 02:33:28 PM »
My tach has a bad growl/vibration even though it reads properly.  Sounds and feels like it is going to explode or shake itself to death.  Changed drive cable and still problem.  Disconnect cable at tach and goes away so problem is in tach.  Almost like bearing/bushing bad in tach.  Anyone have experience with this or know a good gauge repair shop.

Took apart tach.  Cleaned it up and oiled the wick that was completely dryed out.  Tach works fine now.

Thanks for the tip Autocar!  My tach is making the same noise and I feared it would self destruct it gets so loud.  I'll see about taking mine apart.

The Tach is a really easy gauge to restore. Like Autocar stated get the wick out and oil it up and it should quiet right down.

Any tips on removing the bezel from the housing to take it apart?  I've tried pulling, and tried to twist/spin it off.  Trying to be gentle because as far as I can tell there isn't anything wrong with it and I don't want to damage it...$$$$!  But, I do want to clean the glass and repaint the bezel to match my newly repainted dash.  TIA!

The tach bezel just pushes on the housing, Tom. You may have to encourage it a little side to side with a small hammer and soft drift. And remember - it's only money!
