Seal removal
« on: June 24, 2017, 02:32:26 PM »
Hi guys while I'm in between other halftrack projects I decided to work on the top rollers. All the seals are shot so I figure I'll take the assemblies part and clean the hubs and bearings. Fought with one seal for about 45 minutes. Any tips on breaking the rollers down and getting the bearings out to clean up. Don't want to be banging on the bearings like a monkey and screwing good them up. Can't get a good purchase on anything with the brass drift to get anything to move.

On my cast rollers the only way is to tap on the bearing, there is no relief cut to catch the outer race.  On the stamped version it looks like you may be able to get a pry bar through the center to catch on the race, maybe. Only other thing is to use a press but you are still pushing on the race.

Does anyone know the part number or equivalent for the bearings inside the support rollers?

I got a set of new rollers (old ones were demilled and kaput), so having to create from scratch.
I got the roller, the brackets, and the shaft...figured I need the internal bearings...is there anything else I need?

Thanks,
kk

Ken,

You'll need the seals for each side as well.  Not sure if you want to reuse the old ones or not.  There are NOS out there or new National seal, which I'm going to use.  I'll have to look the number up and I'll send a PM.

National 473458  these (supposedly) work for the track rollers and the bogies.

Check this thread for bearing numbers. I believe bogie and guide rollers are the same.  http://halftrackinfo.com/index.php?topic=709.0
