Steering Gear Assembly leaking
« on: February 25, 2020, 07:49:44 PM »
The Lever Assembly (A214424) that exits the steering gear assembly that the Pitman Arm connects to is leaking at the place it exits the Steering Gear Assembly. Is that clear enough? LOL.  In the ORD 9, Page 269, bottom illustration, shows this in detail. Lever A exiting the Steering Assembly is where the leak is.  My question is, is there a seal for that area?  Thanks for any info!

Steering box seal National 323138

This is for the smaller "T" steering box used on M3A1 Scoutcars and M2 halftracks.

Hi Steve,
Thank you so much for the reply.
Unfortunately I have the larger steering box for M3 halftrack.  Anyone know what seal is needed for the larger one?
Regards, Mike

It's the same seal for the larger TA box Mike.

I wanted to let everyone know that the "Steering Gear Worm Shaft Seal- Manual Steering- National 323138" is easily found on Ebay.  I haven't put it in yet but hopefully will get to that next week.  Certainly have a lot more time on my hands now with this dang Covid slowdown.

Any helpful hints about putting it on?

I made a simple tool from a PVC coupling that I slipped onto the shaft and just pushed the seal in using the pitman shaft nut. There's not a lot of room to tap it in using a socket and hammer or similar.

Jon, thanks for the tip!  It is a very tight place for working for sure.
