Timing
« on: April 16, 2020, 08:11:24 PM »
I've searched through the forums and I've looked through all the TM's and I can't seem to come up with a solid answer.  The TM's mention setting the timing, but don't say where to set it.  I assume this means that in an ideal world the timing should be set to zero degrees TDC?  If so, is that where you guys have had best results?

Thanks,

Corey

I struggled to get mine timed, not sure why but after I did the same thing about 10 times it worked. Remove the small cover over the fly wheel on the driver side by the oil pan, two bolts there. Rotate the fly wheel to TDC, open the distributor and put the roater on, set the number one spark plug wire directly over the roater. Should be pretty darn good. The pints should be just opening.

-Warm the engine to operating temp.
-Set the point gap first as this affects the timing.
-Remove the timing cover on the drivers side.
-Manually roll the engine to TDC and you'll see a steel ball on the flywheel and a pointer attached to the bellhousing.  Take some white paint and paint the ball and the pointer otherwise you can't see them when the engine is running.
-Attach a timing light onto the #1 spark plug wire.
-Start the engine and run it at normal idle speed.
-Hold a mirror at the timing cover opening so you can see the timing marks.  Shoot the timing light into the opening and you can see the marks.  If you're really good, you can bounce the light off the mirror and still read the marks.
-Loosen and rotate the distributor until the ball and the pointer line up.  Then lock down distributor
-Put timing cover back on
ALL DONE!
