Another thing to check into is a poor spark. A week battery (constantly being jump started), poor points gap, week condenser / coil, can all allow it to run, but poorly. Iv experienced all these things and was amazed how these engines can keep running, although poorly, when something is set wrong. I’d also clean all the contacts in your voltage regulator box.
