Clutch fixed!

Ever since I got my half-track the clutch would drag and make it impossible to shift into gear from neutral without grinding. I’d have to shut it off to put in gear and then start it and take off and then shift without the clutch. I assumed the disk was sticking on the input shaft spline or the pilot bearing was stuck - something wasn’t letting the input shaft stop turning with the clutch disengaged. I was hoping it would free up with use, but it didn’t so I finally bit the bullet and fixed it. When I got the clutch out the only thing I could see that may have been causing the trouble was that the disk was glazed and a little sticky, like oil or grease may have gotten on it. Although the spline was a little caked with crud that may have not let the disk slide away from the flywheel completely. Anyhow, I had the flywheel and pressure plate surfaced, cleaned and reassembled the clutch, shined up the input shaft spline, replaced the pilot and throwout bearings and it works great now! What a pleasure to drive compared to before!

Jon, may have to follow your lead ..that answers my questions regards pulling the trany with the engine in.  Will have to give you a call ..

Looks like you pulled your floorboard, center console, cross member, trany mount and dropped it right out.  Did you pull it with the transfer case attached?
I have a pretty heavy duty trany jack .. but will probably pull the transfer case as I am a cult of one and it will be easier to balance.  My engine hoist will come in handy to take some weight off as I pull the trany bolts and help lower the trany down on the jack.

I pulled the transmission and transfer case together and replaced them the same way. You can make a support that will keep the assembly level and solid enough on a floor jack that you can slide everybody out and back in on the proper plane. If you have a transmission jack, so much the better. Going back in, it can't be mis-aligned at all. Working alone, I used a come-along to pull them back into place once I had it properly aimed.
