Do they need any special care or treatment. Spent a little time on line and didn’t find anything. Would be ashamed to have it just break down because of neglect.

I treat my shelter halves with
Canvak
to restore their water repellency. Should be fine for canvas water buckets as well...although there's a warning that it's harmful or fatal if swallowed.

If you're going to drink water out of it for some reason, consider
Ultra Durable Canvas Waterproofing
instead:
