Fuel tank install question
« on: August 28, 2024, 10:45:52 AM »
Can anyone with superjeeps  M2 repo fuel tanks tell me how they installed them in their half track?  I’m wondering if I should use plywood as the originals had or some other type of insulator / buffer .

I have one original tank, fits as it should and one of p. Jacobs repo tanks.  The reproduction tank is very well constructed! Overbuilt , sturdy and fits snugly under an original tank cover.  However the drain hole and fuel feed fitting are off by a half inch?  The drain port is not accessible in this situation. It’s just inside of the armor opening resting on the armor floor.
Currently installed with 1/2 inch plywood on the bottom and side.  This M2 has Original rear bed armor , nuts and bolts. It looks like if I removed the plywood the drain hole and fuel feed ports would fit nicely in the armor floor and tank cover openings.  However if I do that then the tank would bump up against the floor  and side armor nuts/bolts?   Any advice on the install of these tanks?   My current option is to remove the tank and weld in new fuel and drain port bungs and keep the plywood as the originals had. I wanted to get feedback on others installations before fixing the tank so it fits.

I've got Paul's tanks in my M3 and used plywood. However, I produced most of my rear armor myself and drilled the holes in the track armor in relation to the tank drains. Sorry I couldn't be more help.

Hi mark , Thanks for the reply .  I have seen a picture of what I think are Paul’s tanks along with reproduction track armor with larger sized drain holes?  So in that case I can them fitting ok.   The  tank dimensions were copied from originals and are pretty close.  From what I’m finding though is the drain and fuel feed port were taken from the bed without taking in the consideration of the half inch plywood .   It’s the only thing that makes sense.  Maybe future built tanks will Keep the half inch plywood  in mind?
I’m sure others have dealt with this issue . Hoping for an easier fix other than removing the tank and welding in new ports. Glad I didn’t put gas in it yet!!   The other option is to find an original tank in ok condition and put that in.  I’m not opposed to trading this new repo tank for an original that I can repair to hold fuel.
