 Just to be clear the photo is of a late style air cleaner.
1941 White M2
1942 White M4A1 was M4
1942 Autocar M2A1
1942 Autocar M3-75
1943 White M13 rebuilt as M16
1943 Diamond T M3A1

the early style could only pull air from the engine compartment. the later style required a hole through the firewall  which gave you the option of pulling air through the engine compartment or the cab area.

here is a pic of the early style and also  a pic of the later style penetration in the firewall.

There must have been a mwo to change those in the field to later style. You can see in the picture the hole in the firewall is not factory. Those have rounded corners.
