Can someone tell me what size the the stud and nut is for the retainer, 3/8"? 1/2"? trying to make one and can't tell from pictures what size it is. Thanks

5/16 can get other info if you need it

This is the clamp to the support rod for the windshield armor, is 5/16 correct?
-
Clamp to support rod wing bolt should be 3/8".

That's some clear glass you have there! ;D
-
If you use a wing BOLT in stead of a stud with a wing NUT you can close the windshield armor with your glass in place. If you use a stud you must remove the glass before you close the armor.

Thanks everyone, I'm off to make parts...

I always questioned the design of this windshield retainer. I bet there was all kinds of instances where soldiers either forgot to remove the glass before lowering the windshield or it fell down accidentally and broke the glass. It just seemed like that was an obvious change that any engineer designing a halftrack would have considered. I believe that the International halftracks had a different design that allowed the armor to be lowered with the glass in place. Outsiders suggestion could have been built just as easily and been more practical.

Hi all,
I have just got my new windshield back from the profilers for my White Scout car. I'm now in the process of fitting the windshield armor retainer.
From what I can see the stud mentioned in these posts is situated roughly 1 3/4" above the blind hole for the centre windshield support rod. Can anyone confirm that measurement please? I think the scout car and halftrack are the same in that respect.
I also liked Outsider's idea of using a wing bolt instead of using the welded stud and a wing nut. What do you think is the best way to fit this wing bolt? Do I just drill and tap a small 3/8" hole in the windshield? Will that give enough thread depth for the wing bolt?
Is there a better method?
Many thanks.

Is there enough room to weld a nut?
-
Hi Lordsandy,
Yes, I wondered if it might be worth welding a nut over the threaded hole just to provide a bit more thread depth. I'll do a measurement today.

Drill the plate just shy of going thru with a flat end mill. Then tap with a bottoming tap. That will get you about 3/8" of threads in the hole. Plenty for what it is doing.

Hi Steve
Thanks for that. I will give that a try.
