After looking at hundreds of photos of half-track in Europe I have come to the conclusion that there was a pretty good chance that an M-2 that had been retrofitted to A1 configuration probably would have mine racks installed as well, although it looks like more time then not stuff other then mines was actually stored in them, which is handy because I'll never be able to afford that many mines but yet love that lived in look that they developed over there. I know there is a set of sketches for the mine racks for an M-3, but the M-2 front brackets would be different, does some one have the drawings for that bracket, or the whole thing. I've decided this is going to be my winter project this year. Thanks Bob.
-
You will notice they call them mine racks but rarely will you see wartime pics of them there. Lets face it, mines on the outside where troops are sitting inside wasnt the smartest thing lol
-
Usually you only see mines in the racks early in the war, once we started moving into Germany you mostly saw ammo cans, which is what I would use, a lot less likely to blow up if hit by a bullet!
-
I have some drawings I made from my mineracks. They are for an M3, but you can shorten them for an M2.

As far as I can tell the only difference is the front mounting plate, because the side door on the M-2 was in the way, the plate can't be as long and the angle of the bend will probably be different as well, there are measurements already on this site for the M-3 racks which I can use for everything but the front bracket, I was really hoping someone with an M-2 with mine racks would chip in!
-
I've been digging through Hunnicuts book tonight, comparing the differences on the mine racks, and I'm thinking they used the same plate on the front of the mine racks, instead of the angle pointing down as it does on the M-3 they point it up, I need to look up the dimensions for the side locker door then draw up a scale ruler for the picture in one of my books, it has a good close up of the ammo door but also shows a good shot of the very front of the front mounting plate, as usual nothing comes easy on these thing!
-
Bob,
If you can be patient I will make drawings of my mine racks with photos but it will have to wait till November as I'm getting ready for winter and getting over a cold now.

Thanks! a picture is worth a thousand words...

With that tape measure in there it will be no problem to replicate them, as soon as I get all my fire wood in I'm going to get started!

As much as I would love to have a ready made original set of racks the shipping alone would be more then I can afford, if you could find some one putting a container together for shipment to the US they would probably be a great deal!
-
There is a US manufacturer already. They can be bought thru a us halftrack dealer on the east coast lol. I wont mention a name lol

Yeah but I can't even afford his! Even his shipping cost to me in AZ would be outrageous, any time you cross the miss river shipping gets crazy, plus I'm cheap.
-
If anyone is interested in M2 or M2A1 mine racks (same thing) I'm getting some made up for another member. They are $550 a set. PM or email me if interested. You are responsible for shipping unless you will be at Tower Park then I can bring a set down for you.

-
Steve, Any chance I could just buy the end brackets? The rest is easy and would save me a bunch on shipping. Thanks Bob.
-
Bob,
I will look into getting a price for you. Are you talking about the piece that is welded to the outer edge in front and slopes inward and bolts to the armor just in front of the ammo lockers? Let me know if that is correct or not.
Thanks,
Steve A.
-
Hi Steve, Yes those and the two pieces for the rear of the racks. Thanks
-
Those pieces are at the front of the racks and bolt just behind the ammo lockers. They are $30 set with $15 shipping.

Here is a photo of what I'm thinking. Is this what you need?

If not let me know as I went ahead and getting a set made.

Hi Steve, Those are the ones! let me know when they are ready and where to send the money. Thanks Bob. rcchell@xpressweb.com

Chuck
Chuck, Did you want mine racks or just the front piece circled in red?
Steve A.
-
I think that is the same on the M3 mine racks as well If they are I'll take a set too. I'll dig out my drawings and see.
Don G.
-
I'm pretty sure that the front bracket is the same, except on the M-2 it's turned the other way as the M-3.
-
Sorry Steve, I was wanting the angle pieces. I think shipping on the whole set would eat me alive.
Chuck

Steve,
I will take a set of the front pieces.

Has the deal been stalled by some thing? I haven't gotten an address yet to send you money, spring is here and I really want to get the mine racks done before the spring car show! Thanks.
-
UPDATE - I got the first samples back from the fab shop and were totally wrong. Thankfully they didn't charge me. I'm going to make a set of drawings to post in the next week or so and will try to get them made again after Tower Park late April. I will get another set made and go from their.
Steve A.
-
Thanks Steve, I kind of figured these pieces were going to have to be quite accurate to fit, which was why I was glad someone else was undertaking the effort, Bob.
-
Bob, It wasn't the fit that was the problem. It was the fact that after making a template at their shop they lost it and tried to wing it. They should have called me to bring the mine rack back in. That was the problem.

Has this project been stalled by something? I've spent the last couple months getting the half-track and AT gun ready for the car show so I forgot all about this, now that things are almost back to normal I would really like to get the mine racks going, if you have a good set of drawings for the whole thing I would be willing to buy a set of them and just have them built locally, of course with the convention I realize things are going to be delayed, but when you get a chance please ket me know. Thanks Bob.
-
I actually made and posted drawings for the mine racks a while back. Here is a link to them.
