Front Hub Questions
« on: June 22, 2015, 10:39:23 PM »
Hello,
Looking for a little expertise on my front hub situation as I think I may need to replace both, and I don't completely remember how things came apart, and have not been able to find any references in the manuals yet.
1st photo and last photo with the OD hub. Note where on the seal side of the hub it has been worn away due to loose bearings. This side of the front end was essentially destroyed with the brake shoes completely worn at an angle due to the slop in the bearings. Also giant "dent" where the drum mounts. This would cause the drum to be out of alignment with the axle I believe.
2nd photo shows the other hub with somewhat of a flange on it. This flange is pretty mangled up too.
3rd photo shows one of the axle seals with a ring that seems to fit around it.
4th photo shows seal and flange mated together.

So my questions for the experts;
What is a proper hub supposed to look like? Is the "ring" that fits over the seal supposed to press into the the hub? Is there supposed there any sort of retainer, or is it a press fit? My unpainted hub has a very sloppy and loose fit of the ring so I don't think it would make a very good seal. So in my mind, they both will need to be replaced.
Does this all make sense? Any insight would be most appreciated.
Thank you!
Mark

From the pictures things don't look good but are far from gone. A good shop should be able to fix all the issues with your hubs. Of course that depends on cost and availability of replacement hubs. Id check with local drive line shops or truck shops and see what can be done. Best of luck either way you go!

Mark, If you are interested I have a couple of extra front axels on halftracks that have bad frames. The front axles should be good. They don't seem to leak oil. if I remember right the speedos only showed about 5000 miles. I am wanting to get rid of some of my extra stuff anyway but I just hate to scrap it when people might be able to use it.
